Green Island Fiesta 2024
Thanks for celebrating the Green Island Fiesta with Us
On Sunday September 8th we celebrated the rich history and community spirit of this special area of Congleton, with kids fair rides, art, food, drink, conversation and reminiscence. Until the relentless rain stopped play
Green Island is the area centred around Spragg Street, between Willow Street, Bromley Road, and Brunswick Street. It was once one of Congleton’s major industrial centres, known for its textile mills and workers’ houses, including the notorious Gibraltar Rocks. Thanks to those who brought their stories which were recorded by Anna Maluk from the Museum and they are still collecting oral histories and photographs of the area. Your stories and pictures are valuable memories to be kept safe for future generations and will help us show the history of Green Island to everyone who visits the museum.
The Museum also hosted a heritage walk through Green Island and talked about the area’s historical spots and historic past and the Electric Picture House was busy all day with creative arts workshops, open studios and a contemporary arts exhibition.
